Scientific Writing Lab: Individual Tutoring Service - DIGITAL

Are you having trouble writing a document or preparing a presentation in English? The Tutoring Service can help! Here, you will receive individually tailored advice towards enhancing your English language competence for a wide variety of purposes, including writing essays, reports, or theses; submitting academic or job applications; preparing for language exams; or creating seminar or conference presentations.
NOTE: this is not a course in the traditional sense, as we will not meet together in a group at regular times. Rather, the purpose here is for you to obtain commentary specifically focused on your own language use (e.g., clarity and coherence, appropriate vocabulary), style (e.g., following academic conventions), and persuasiveness (e.g., considering audience needs and expectations).
After you enroll for the Tutoring Service, please go to its HU Berlin Moodle site (password = tutoring), where you will find information on how to proceed and arrange a minimum of two, thirty-minute appointments for us to meet online and discuss your writing/presenting concerns. If you have a special need to meet outside the times listed below, we can discuss possible alternatives.

This 20-unit TOEFL Course (Test of English as a Foreign Language) will cover all the major parts of the exam – Listening, Writing, Speaking and Reading and their component parts. The exam itself is Internet based and students will be familiarised with the process at the beginning of the course. The content of each part will be relevant to each student since it deals with campus life, lectures, lecture notes, note taking, balancing an argument, discussion and other such areas of University life. The main focus therefore, will be on the techniques and skills necessary to obtain high scores in the TOEFL exam. Since there is no grammar component any grammar points will be addressed through personal feedback and going over any areas of weakness with the whole class. Students will be expected to complete tests for homework, either for discussion in class or for personal feedback. By the end of the course the students will be well prepared and have the solid foundation and knowledge to go to the exam with confidence. Number of participants: min 10, max 18.
