English for Natural Sciences
  Venue is on the science campus in Adlershof. This course explores the language used for research across the natural sciences, specifically focusing on typical grammatical structures, vocabulary/idioms, and written forms. Basing ourselves on a common core, participants select readings to be used as the basis for group presentations. Regular in-class participation, completion of homework tasks, and development of brief team and individual presentations and writing assignments will be expected. English for Students of Law: English Law
  This course will focus on the language of legal discourse in various areas of English law. You will deal with a variety of topics from both civil law and the criminal justice system (e.g. the civil and criminal courts, the legal profession, contract law, the jury system, the elements of the crime, analysis of various offences). While all language skills are practised, the focus is on reading, listening and speaking. As home assignment, you will prepare a short case presentation. A lot of effort will be put into boosting the range of vocabulary, with a special focus on the adequate use of legal language. Grammar practice will be remedial. The Leistungsnachweis will be awarded on the basis of regular and active participation and the final tests in reading, listening, speaking and vocabulary/grammar.

English for Economics and Business Studies 2
  This course is a continuation of the four-hour course 1, but it is also suitable for qualified newcomers. It focuses on the further development of reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. We will deal with a variety of topics related to business, e.g. the European Union, Globalisation, International Trade, Business Ethics etc. Students will practise business vocabulary, the use of prepositions in economic context and revise grammatical structures. Final tests: Listening comprehension, Writing, Vocabulary. The successful completion of this course (in addition to course 1) will entitle participants to obtain the UNIcert® II certificate in Business English.

English for Arts and Humanities
  With an emphasis on speaking and reading, this course is designed for students of the Arts and Humanities and will cover topics of general interest: art, film, music, and various current events. Participants will give presentations based on an approved topic of their choice. Throughout the semester, there will also be ample grammar review and vocabulary building, along with regular discussion and some writing practice. Apart from attending class regularly (there is an 80% attendance requirement), students are expected to submit weekly homework assignments and to make regular use of the Moodle course site. The final test will comprise three components: (1) a reading comprehension test, (2) a vocabulary and grammar test, and (3) a short oral exam (10–15 minutes). The Leistungsnachweis will be awarded on the basis of regular and active participation as well as the successful completion of the final tests.

Intercultural Competence in English: Speaking and Writing
  This course gives participants the chance to improve their language skills in the realm of intercultural communication. We will use authentic media (podcasts, videos, newspaper articles, research papers) to discuss and write about topics that range from code switching to face theory. We will examine how cultural norms and traditions affect the language we use. Case studies will give participants the opportunity to see real-life applications of intercultural competence. To earn course credit, participants should prepare a presentation on a culture of their choice. Regular, individual language feedback will help students see how they are progressing. Grammar practice will be customized to participants’ needs.

English for Academic Purposes: Grammar & Vocabulary for Writing
  This course is designed for students who want to improve their overall academic writing skills. You will learn to write among others, cover letters, summaries, paragraphs, essays. In addition, you will be able to practise and revise grammar points, such as the simple and continuous forms of all present and past tense, active/passive tenses, and conditional forms. You will receive individual feedback as well as the necessary assistance to accommodate individual needs. A further emphasis is on expanding your academic vocabulary in the context of reading and speaking activities. The Leistungsnachweis will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance of the course, active participation in group discussions and debates, as well as successful completion of a final examination, scheduled for the last week of the course, which will cover grammar, vocabulary and writing.

  Historical figures through the ages: In this course we will look at the lives of women and men influential in science, culture and politics. We will look at the language necessary to describe people and their achievements in the various disciplines, broadening your academic vocabulary. There will also be a genuine opportunity for you to perfect your verb tenses, while other grammar areas are only treated if and as need arises. On the basis of your own research you will prepare a ten-minute presentation introducing a relevant figure of your field of studies to the group. Apart from the oral grade for the presentation you will get grades in Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary in a final test.

  This course is designed to develop the two language skills of listening and speaking. There will be ample opportunity to boost vocabulary, to improve and develop listening and speaking abilities. An emphasis will be placed on giving presentations and fluency. With regards to listening, the focus will be on listening for gist as well as for specific information. The Leistungsnachweis will be awarded on the basis of regular and active participation as well as successful completion of the final test. The test will take place on the Monday of the last week and will consist of listening and vocabulary sections. The final grade will additionally contain a speaking component, based on the course participant’s performance in class over the duration of the course and a short class presentation.

In writing it emphasizes sentence structure, paragraph organization and usage of formal English grammar especially with regards to essay writing. The Leistungsnachweis will be awarded on the basis of regular and active participation as well as successful completion of the final test. The test will take place on the Wednesday of the last week and will consist of a reading section and a final essay.
