English for Master's and PhD Students: Writing for Research in the Social Sciences and the Humanities - PRÄSENZ

This course is for those who are working on writing up their research (in English). Those working on a research article, a master’s or a Ph.D. thesis will profit from this course. Indeed, in order to benefit from the course, experience has shown that participants should be able to submit "work in progress," that is, they should have some writing outside this course that they are working on (such as an article or a thesis) that they can try to improve in this course.  This course is not designed for those trying to improve their general academic writing in English in order to write better seminar papers – essay writing courses do this better.  In this course we will, first, analyze the structure of the argument in the research paper in your discipline, concentrating especially on the structure of a good introduction. Second, we will examine strategies to write better academic prose, concentrating on improving coherence and flow.  In the last few weeks of the course, students will read each other’s work (usually up to approximately 10 pages of an ongoing project). The grade for the course will be based on your written work and class participation.

English for Students of Law, Gender Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences: Gender, Society and the Law - PRÄSENZ
What is the difference between “sex” and “gender”? Does the law have an intrinsic “male bias”, or has it in fact facilitated women’s liberation? How should the law promote the rights of transgender persons while still safeguarding those of women and girls? Should we speak about “prostitution”, or rather use the more neutral term “sex work”, and is the current proliferation of online pornography an outgrowth of sexual liberation, or rather a manifestation of widespread misogyny in Western culture? If you have found yourself wondering about any of these issues, you might wish to consider more closely the relationship between gender, law and society. The primary aim of this interdisciplinary course is to introduce students to key topics in gender studies through the reading of a wide range of legal and non-legal texts. By critically reading, discussing and writing about topical issues pertaining to gender and the law, students will develop both their oral and written communication skills.  In-class activities, such as class discussions and presentations, will provide participants with an opportunity to express their views on key social and legal issues, and thereby enable them to practise their public-speaking skills and fine-tune their command of legal academic discourse. At the end of the course, students will produce one formal written assignment.
Content: Topics are likely to include: the distinction between “sex” and “gender”; a historical overview of the three main waves of the feminist movement; liberal, cultural and radical feminist approaches to the law and society; the gay rights movement and the law; the apparent tension between transgender rights and gender-critical feminism; sexism in the legal profession; and the legal regulation of prostitution/ sex work.
Assessment: The course will be assessed by means of a class presentation and one final written assignment.

Critical Perspectives on World Literature and Film - DIGITAL

Everyone has favorite literary works that have been transformed into better or worse film versions, though we’ve often heard the verdict that “the book was much better than the film”. In this course, we’ll consider works of literature and their film adaptations from around the world, especially focusing on ones in which non-standard varieties of English are showcased. Each week, we’ll read excerpts from selected novels, memoirs, short stories, or plays and critically compare them to their cinematic adaptations. Topics considered will include racial, gender, and sexual oppression; (civil) war; migration; religious and cultural clashes; addiction; rebelliousness and crime; and the individual’s relationship to society. We’ll also discuss differences between cinema and literature as forms of artistic expression, examining their strengths and weaknesses in portraying the myriad dimensions of human experience. Participants will be expected to provide short team reviews of selected books and films, actively discuss and critically analyze course topics and materials, and write a brief final essay or review.

International English Varieties, Dialects, and Accents - DIGITAL

International travel, work, study, music, film, and internet surfing increasingly bring many of us into frequent contact with the enormous diversity of English-language usage from around the world. This course attempts to provide a basic introduction to some of the most well-known or important of these global varieties and the colonial history from which they have emerged. Following clarification of some fundamental distinctions in terms of categorizing dialects, accents, and pidgins, each week we will focus on a particular sort of English. Literary readings, film excerpts, songs, and authentic audio recordings will be employed to give us a foothold towards understanding a small sample of the kinds of contemporary English, including Indian, Nigerian, South African, Irish, Scottish, Australian, African-American (Ebonics), Spanglish, Chinglish, New Yorkese, Multicultural London English, Jamaican Patwa and Rastafarian Dread Talk.
Although we will not have enough time to deeply explore all of the permutations within each of these broad speech communities, their main traits, historical backgrounds, and socio-political importance will be highlighted. The overriding goal will not be to view these representatives of the total spectrum of English as inferior ‘deviations’ from so-called standard English usage but rather to demonstrate their inherent beauty and functionality, while also recognizing the valuable contributions that they make towards keeping world English ever-changing and vibrant. Rudimentary terminology borrowed from linguistics will be used to conceptually frame the course, but no specialist knowledge is required, though students of linguistics are of course welcome. Participants will be required to do a brief presentation and paper.

FRS English: Legal System and Legal Method - PRÄSENZ

This course aims to give students a broad overview of the English legal system and how it functions. We will first look at the sources of English law (custom, common law, equity, European Union law, and the law of the European Convention on Human Rights), and then move on to examine some of the distinctive features of the English legal system. Here we will focus on judicial precedent (case law), the aspect of English law that most obviously distinguishes it from civil-law systems, and then turn our attention to statutory interpretation. Thus, we will work closely with both law “created by judges” and law made by Parliament. We will then consider the structural aspects of English law, looking closely at the English court system and the work done by judges (legally trained professionals) and magistrates and juries (lay persons). In doing so, we will consider the key differences between the English adversarial trial system and the civil inquisitorial one. Finally, we will consider the legal profession itself. We will see that the English legal profession is a split one, with legal work divided between solicitors and barristers. We will finish the course by considering some interesting/controversial issues or cases that have arisen in English law in recent years.
The course will be assessed by a formal two-hour closed-book examination.

FRS English: Constitutional and Administrative Law - PRÄSENZ
Based mainly on the course textbook: Colin Faragher   Concentrate Public Law (7th Edition) Oxford University Press 2021 (to be purchased by participants) this course will provide an introduction to the principles and sources of constitutional law in the UK. Beginning with an analysis of the functions of a constitution we will discuss how these are implemented in an unwritten constitution, such as the constitution of the UK. This will be followed by a discussion of fundamental constitutional principles, namely the rule of law, the separation of powers and parliamentary sovereignty. The central position of the legislature will be analysed including the roles of the monarchy, the House of Lords (including the abolition/ reform debate) and the House of Commons (including the electoral reform debate). The question of whether the UK is becoming a de facto federal state will be discussed with reference to the position and role of the devolved legislatures in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The question of parliamentary sovereignty will be re-examined in the context of the UK’s former membership of the EU before, during and after the post Brexit transition period. The impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 on the UK will be assessed through an examination of relevant case law. Finally, judicial review, the means of challenging the acts and decisions of public bodies, will be introduced and discussed, again with reference to relevant case law. In addition to regular extensive and intensive reading, each participant will be expected to give a 15-minute presentation on one of the topics outlined above. The final examination consists of a two-hour written paper taken in the last week of the course.
